Bilbao, Spain – A quaint city

Bilbao, Spain – A quaint city

A city with many bridges; People who behave like the French but are warm and friendly. This city has something to offer to the quintessential traveller. There is a Fine arts museum, a stadium, a shopping mall, historical churches, nature hiking, a palace right in the centre of the city and many more. But its biggest attraction is the Guggenheim Museum. It is a museum of modern and contemporary art, gleaming with titanium and glass designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry. According to me, the architecture of the building is great but one can give the exhibition a miss as the paintings are far better at the Fine arts museum. However, if you an art enthusiast, go ahead and enjoy the exhibition.

But for me the best sight was the travel to two beaches just outside the city - Arriatera-Atxabiribil beach (closer to Larrabasterra Station) and Plentzia beach (close to Plentzia station). Each easily accessible by the metro, approximate travel time of 45 mins and a good 20 mins walk and I was in a different world. A world where it was just me and the big vast and wide ocean. Both the beaches are pretty quiet and not a touristy area. Here the locals come and spend their time chatting, walking along the shore and for some there is adventure in the form of surfboarding.

The most popular beaches are the Arrietara – Atxabiribil beach and the Wild Beach – Barinatxe. Arrietara– Atxabiribil Beach, an 800-metre long beach with large waves, protected by a cliff, ideal for surfing. WildBeach – Barinatxe, a 750-metre long nudist beach, separated from Arrietara beach by a rocky cove called “La Triangu”. The cove formation at the beach is a very picturesque sight.

There are 5 bridges across the city that connects the two banks of the Nervión River. Of all the pedestrian bridges, Zubizuri Bridge is worth a mention due to its futuristic tied-arch design & a curved walkway.

Mount Arxtanda is connected through a funicular. From here you get panoramic views of the city. With tree shades lining the top of the mountain, it is makes for a quiet stroll.

Overall, a good place to visit when travelling in Spain
